Isaac Computer Science Research Data

From April 2023, IsaacComputerScience.org will no longer be managed by the University of Cambridge. However, the University will continue our work at the forefront of research into technology-enhanced learning, supported by your data as part of our Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre.

This Privacy Notice describes how we use the collected personal information about you in accordance with data protection law, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

 

Terminology

We and Us both mean the Computing Education Research Centre, run by staff at the Department of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Cambridge.

Website means the website run by the Isaac Computer Science Project until 27/03/2023: isaaccomputerscience.org.

You and Your is the user connecting to the website using a web browser.

Your IP Address is a numerical identifier assigned by the computer network to allow the website to communicate with your computer.

Cookie is a small piece of information sent by the website, stored by your web browser, and returned by your web browser to the website whenever you use our website.

Purpose of this document

We are committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal information.

This Privacy Notice describes how we collect and use personal information about you in accordance with data protection law, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The University of Cambridge is the Data Controller. This means that we are responsible for deciding how we hold and use personal information about you. We are required under data protection legislation to notify you of the information contained in this Privacy Notice.

Data collected

Personal data collected will be processed in accordance with the terms of this Privacy Notice. The Privacy Notice explains what personal data we hold about you, how we collect it, and how we will use and may share information about you.

We collect, store and process the following data when you use the website:

  • Your usage and interaction with the website, including the pages you view.
  • Information about the computer you use to access the website, including your IP address, operating system and browser type.
  • Any information you enter into any form, text box or data entry mechanism on the website, including, but not limited to:
    • Your answers to questions and problems on the website.
    • Your personal information when you create an account, which can include your name, email address, gender and date of birth.
    • Your answer to surveys and questionnaires.
    • Booking information for online and in-person Isaac Computer Science events, including any relevant dietary and disability information.
  • A record of communications with us by phone, email, post or other online service.
  • Any information you provide to us via a third-party service. For example, if you login via Google, Google provides us with your name and email address.
  • If you opt to receive news or events emails from us, we may be able to tell if, when, and in what general geographic region you delete, open or forward our emails.

Data processing

We may process the data we collect in the following ways:

  • To support research into technology-enhanced learning.
  • To provide summary statistics to the research community, our funders and the general public; summary statistics will not identify any individual.

We use several legal bases when processing your personal data. These are:

Performance of a contract: We may need to use your personal information in order to perform any agreement you have with us. 

Consent: We may ask for your consent to process and share your personal information. 

Public interest: We are Public Authorities as defined in the Freedom of Information Act. As such, we may receive requests which require us to process your personal data in fulfilment of our duties as a university (University of Cambridge). For example, a member of the public may ask us to calculate the total number of active users on the website in any given year.

We currently use the following third-party services to support our data collection and processing requirements:

  • Google Analytics is used to collect statistics on website usage.
  • We receive your name and email address from Google, Facebook or Twitter when you use one of these providers to login to the Website.
  • IPInfoDB provides us with an approximate geographical location of Your IP address.
  • We use Qualtrics to deliver questionnaires and surveys.
  • We work with Strobe (a service run by UCAS) to support our research into the effectiveness of our platform for online learning.
  • We work with the Raspberry Pi Foundation to support research into technology-enhanced learning.
  • Google Workspace is used to store and process data by the University of Cambridge and Raspberry Pi.
  • MailGun and MailJet may be used to send email to you.

We may amend this list of third-party service providers in order to support our data collection and processing requirements. We have not, and will never, sell your data to third-party service providers. We will only use third-parties to support our data collection and processing requirements.

Data sharing and disclosure

We may publish summary statistics using the data we hold; this will not identify any individual.

Transfer to Countries Outside UK/EEA

In order to support the platform, data may be transferred to countries outside the United Kingdom/European Economic Area. By submitting your personal information, you accept that you understand this transfer, processing and storage. When transferring data in this way we take steps to ensure your privacy rights continue to be protected.

Data Retention

We may retain the personal information you provide to us until the purposes for which it was collected cease to exist or as may be required by law, if that is longer. You can request your account be deleted by email to rpcerc-isaac@cst.cam.ac.uk.

Third-party cookies

We have selected and used third parties because they improve the functionality of the site for you. Cookies generated by those sites are subject to their own privacy policies and are outside our control. Our Cookie Policy contains further information on how to control use of cookies on our site as well as by third-parties.

Examples of how cookies are used on the Website include:

  • Analytical or performance cookies – These cookies collect information in an anonymous form about website use. They recognise and count the number of visitors to see how visitors use the website. Examples include Google Analytics cookies.

You may refuse to accept some or all cookies by activating the appropriate setting in your browser. However, if you set your browser settings to block all cookies, including essential cookies, you will not be able to log into your account.

Your data protection rights

Under certain circumstances, you have the right:

  • To ask us for access to information about you that we hold.
  • To have your personal data rectified, if it is inaccurate or incomplete.
  • To request the deletion or removal of personal data where there is no compelling reason for its continued processing.
  • To restrict our processing of your personal data (i.e. permitting its storage but no further processing).
  • To object to direct marketing (including profiling) and processing for the purposes of scientific/historical research and statistics.
  • Not to be subject to decisions based purely on automated processing where it produces a legal or similarly significant effect on you.
